Guidance

The quality of guidance at Cromer High is very special and is frequently commented on by parents and various agencies. On all non-trivial matters we attempt to involve parents in supporting students, in the firm belief that partnership is the best approach.

The Guidance system is the basic support structure of the school:

Houses & Heads of House:

  • Bailey - Jo Gilding - Red House
  • Blogg - Chris Carey - Blue House
  • Dixon - Lou Johnson - Green House
  • Heartwell - Alison Bonnington - Yellow House

Behaviours 4 Learning Policy
Here at Cromer High School we deliver a 'Behaviours 4 Learning Policy'. This policy covers a number of aspects focusing towards a better teaching and learning environment within our school.

What are the purposes of this policy?

  • Empower staff to teach and manage student behaviour.
  • Ensure the students are safe, valued and more involved in their learning.
  • To communicate to students what good behaviour means.
  • Use constant positive reinforcement in the pursuit of high standards of work and behaviour.
  • Provide a clear set of stepped rewards and sanctions which all students, parents and staff understand.
  • Provide procedures for achieving the stated aims of the school.

What are the outcomes of the policy?

  • All staff to follow principles and procedures set out in the policy in encouraging students to achieve high standards of work and behaviour.
  • Discipline problems which do arise will be dealt with in a fair and consistent way; in line with procedures and behaviour management strategies underpinning the policy.
  • Internal monitoring will show that classroom activity is structured, purposeful and positive.
  • A reduction in exclusions and referrals. Heads of House will provide evidence of high standards of behaviour in classrooms and around the school.
  • Feedback from members of the local community will reflect the high standards of behaviour students exhibit on their way to school and way home.

As students progress through the adventure of secondary education, they bring with them a wide variety of experiences relating to school, home and life generally. Their individuality is important, and in this respect the personal welfare and development of students receive the highest profile at Cromer High. The role of the Form Tutor is central to this individual attention. Great emphasis is placed on facilitating the right setting for the tutor and student to build a confident working relationship.

The Rewards System

Praise
Every opportunity should be taken to praise students for excellent effort, achievement and behaviour. Everybody feels motivated by encouragement and praise.

Students who work hard and behave well can expect to receive:

• Praise from staff.
• House Point.
• Subject - Special Achievement Awards.
• Positive Contribution Prize Draw.
• 100% Attendance Certificate and Draw.
• April Fabb Cup for Endeavour.
• School Reward Panel letter.
• Headteachers & Governors Reward Panel Letter.
• Cromer Commendation Certificate (CCC).
• Cashing in their House Points for Prizes. (Cromer Rewards Catalogue).

Basic currency House Points / Penalty Points
1 House point may be given out by subject teachers for things like good ILTs, good effort in a lesson, good presentation, good contribution to discussion/debate, etc.

Tutors may also give out 1 House Points for things like good work as a form prefect, being consistently helpful / supporting or mentoring others etc.

These are recorded by members of staff on SIMS ‘Rewards & Sanctions Log’ (One for each form group) Students keep their overall record in their planner. House points and penalty points are cumulative for each pupil. One area does not detract from the other.

Pupils will keep a tight record of all their own house points. As the pupils gain more House points not only will they be referred to the appropriate rewards but they will also need to decide on how they wish to cash their points in. A catalogue will be provided which identifies all prizes and special privileges which the points may be swapped for. (The prizes will range from top up vouchers for phones / book tokens / stationary equipment, through to fast track cards for lunch, transport provided to booked social events, free pass to school discos etc. etc.)
This is a real “points mean prizes” system, with pupils working towards a prize that really means something to them as an individual!

Special Achievement Awards
When a pupil has 12 House points from any subject, or their tutor, they get one Special Achievement Award. Subject teacher/tutor identifies 12 house points on their list and SIMS log (so they don’t get used again!) and enters in the planner why the award has been given and signs it. (One Special Achievement Award can also be given out for one really exceptional positive contribution to a House / Form / Department or School. Must be verified by HOD or HOH)

April Fabb Cup for Endeavour
Each half term Tutors / HOH will nominate pupils from each house. At the Student Development Meetings they will discuss nominations and agree an overall winner for each house. Each winner will also receive a specially commissioned pin badge to be worn on their uniform to identify that they are recipient of the award.
School Reward Panel Letter & Ticket in the Positive Contribution Prize Draw.

When a pupil has 4 Special Achievement Awards (SAA) or 48 House Points they alert their tutor, who will alert the School Rewards Panel. They will write a congratulations card/letter and send it home. They also arrange for the student to get a ticket in the prize draw and record the achievement on the SIMS log.
Headteachers & Governors Reward Panel Letter.

When a pupil reaches 72 House Points (12 SAA) they are referred by their Form Tutor and HOH to the panel who will discuss the pupils achievements and award a CCC (Cromer Commendation Certificate) They will also receive a letter home and consideration for the headteachers annual award.

A ticket in the Attendance Prize Draw
100% attendance for a term

The Prize Draws
At the end of each term there will be a special assembly during which the winning tickets will be drawn.
Four £5 voucher prizes 1 for each House for positive contribution and one £10 prize for 100% attendance.
(Pupils select where they want to get the vouchers from and receive the actual voucher later)

The Penalties system

Penalties- One penalty will be given out for:
• Any infringement of the school uniform policy (e.g. incorrect footwear, shirt under polo etc)
• Graffiti or intentional damage to any school books or planner.
• Eating in an area where eating is not allowed (eating areas are - picnic areas, canteen, main cover hall, - math’s rooms when hall out of action.) Chewing Gum.
• No PE kit.
Two penalty points will be given out for:
• Poor behaviour in class – after a verbal warning and “name on board” warning. (If behaviour improves the name comes off the board and no penalty is incurred.)
• ILT not given in on the day due. (ILT still needs to be completed.)
• Arriving late in lessons.
After every 6 penalty points a letter will be sent home (HOH to initiate), informing parents about their child’s behaviour, warning them of the next sanction, and inviting them to come in to discuss the situation if required (LTD’s will also be set relating to incidents)
The tutor / subject teacher (Supported by HOH) will arrange an appointment to see the student and their parent(s) / guardian(s) as soon as possible after 12 penalties have been accumulated to discuss the student’s behaviour. After school detention will be set. (ASD)

Sent to Head of Department.
Any student whose behaviour does not improve after they have had warnings, name on board and two penalty points will be sent to the Head of Department. The HoD may keep the student in their room or decide to return the student to the lesson after recording the penalties and warning them that further misbehaviour resulting in them being sent to them again will result in Behaviour Card (and therefore exclusion from lessons for a whole day, more penalties, and possible further punishment subsequently). In all cases the referral for behaviour in lessons must go through the Head of Department first.
Behaviour Card.
Following discussions with Subject Teacher/ HOD’s and a HOH (HOH makes decision on behavior card), pupils may be placed on Behaviour Card for:
• Swearing at staff or other students.
• Violent or dangerous behaviour in class.
• Continuous behavioural problems following a formal warning and name on board, and Penalty points (Referral to HOD will also have occurred.)
Being “Behaviour Carded” for behavioural reasons will result in them being placed in the Learning Centre Room for a whole day (period 4 to period 4 the next day etc.), and LTD with Head / Deputy. Any further punishment will be decided by SLT/Head of House after school that day.
• Medical emergency – sent directly to student services with another student to support.

Learning Centre Room (LC Room)
After 24 penalties, or a missed ASD, students are given a fixed time in the LC Room.
All Behaviour Cards will also result in a whole day in the LC Room and four penalties. Certain other offences, such as violent/aggressive/threatening behaviour outside lesson times may also result in a student being moved straight to the LC Room.
Work must be provided with explanation from all subject staff – it is the responsibility of the HOD to monitor and ensure this happens.

School Behaviour Panel
After 36 penalties the student will have a meeting with a member of SLT, their head of house, their tutor, and their parents. At this meeting they will be informed of the next stage that they are being put on to. The next stages will be one or more of:

• Having an IEP or IBP drawn up.
• Being put on a PSP. (Including looking at change of teaching sets or reducing T. Table short term)
• A fixed period in the LC Room
• Restorative Justice
• Allocation of a learning Mentor. (SLT member)
• Referral to outside agencies
• Being referred to an outside agency for further help. (EWS, GP, Ed. Psych. Etc.)
• Recommendations to Headteacher for a fixed-term exclusion. (Followed by a reintegration meeting.)

Certain offences may result in a student being moved straight to the School Behaviour Panel stage, for example criminal damage or dangerous/violent behaviour causing bodily harm.
This panel also serves as a warning that if behaviour does not improve they will reach the Headteacher Behaviour Panel stage.

Headteacher Behaviour Panel
After 72 penalties the student attends a Headteacher Behaviour Panel. This will be a meeting with the student and their parents, a member of SLT, their Head of House and the headteacher. At the meeting there will be a discussion of the student’s behaviour to date and the outcome is likely to be one of:
• Permanent Reduced timetable (in partnership with other agencies)
• Parents withdrawing child from the school.
• A managed move.
• A permanent exclusion.
The school reserves the right to permanently exclude any student involved in the taking, supplying or handling of drugs, or being in possession of an offensive weapon.

Fixed Term Exclusions
A fixed term exclusion from school may be given for a variety of offences, such as bullying, violent behaviour, racist or prejudiced behaviour, swearing & aggressive behaviour directed at a member of staff. Often the student is put in the LC Room while such an incident is investigated before the exclusion is decided upon.

THE USE OF DETENTION

Lunchtime Detention (LTD) (Parents will be informed they have had to be placed in LTD)

Lunchtime Detention (LTD) 12.55 – 1.15 that day. The headteacher (or other senior member of staff in their absence) takes the lunchtime detention and ticks off all completed LTDs in the students planner and on the LTD log. Any student who does not attend, is set an After School Detention (ASD) and seen by SLT and contact is made with home.
Lunchtime Detentions (LTDs) will be given for refusing to hand over planner.

Lost planners also results in a LTDs (and buy a new one!) unless staff feel they are totally genuine (or supported by a note to purchase a new one) and think it better to give them a chance to find it.
After School Detention (ASD) (Parents must be informed by letter or phone call) (Tuesday & Thursdays, 2.35 – 3.35pm)

Every 12 penalties, or a missed LTD, results in an After School Detention (ASD). The member of staff who gives out the 12th, 24th, etc penalty sets the next ASD on a Tuesday or a Thursday (more than 24 hours away!) and then arranges for the detention letter to be sent to parents through student services.

On Monday & Wednesday mornings the names of those on ASD the following day are given to tutors who, asks them to write in their planner that they have an ASD the next day to serve as a reminder.
The names of any students who miss the ASD are given to tutors on Friday morning, and they send those students to the HOH who will be supported by a senior member of staff. If it is their first missed ASD they spend a day in the LC Room and also have to serve the ASD the following Thursday. If it is their second (or more) missed ASD they have a fixed-term exclusion.

All detentions (LTDs and ASDs) are entered on the students’ computerised school record.
Smoking – if a student is caught smoking on or near the school premises they will be given. A formal warning in the first instance (4 penalty points) and 2 lunchtime detention and an after school detention. If caught for a second occasion they will be excluded for 3 days fixed term.
