Winter 1951
17th September - Re-opened after Summer Vacation. Number on Roll 247, in 7 forms, with Headmaster and 9 staff.
28th September - M. Woolgar gave a school film show; titles were Ballet (16 mins), West Indies (10 mins), Latitude & Longitude (10 mins), Wood Chisels (10 mins), Water Supply (20 mins), Conduction (8 mins), Food Poisoning (20 mins).
2nd October - Harvest Thanksgiving - arrangements made by a committee of 2 children from each form under the supervision of Miss King. The Rev. W. Hughes conducted the service & Jacqueline Smith read the lesson.
4th October - Headmaster & Miss Riseboro - Canteen Superintendent visit Sprowston S.M. School to see working of the "Family Service" of School Meals.
5th October - A party of 30 children with Miss King went to Blickling by coach for Brass Rubbing.
8th October - "Family Service" started in canteen, two sittings, staff sitting with children. Approx. 180 taking meals.
17th October - Visit to Flashpit Farm, Blickling, by group of 30 boys with Mr. Arnold.
18th October - 100 boys & girls attended the Town Hall from 2 to 3 pm to hear a programme of music by the New English Orchestra, conductor Leonard Rafter.
25th October - Parliamentary Election Polling Day - School continued as usual but the count took place in the Hall from 9am on 26th - very conveniently half term.
7th November - 2 pianos tuned by Mr. Coles. Mr. Fulcher, Governor, visited 2pm.
9th November - A parent visited to report that her daughter had her chair taken away as she was about to sit down before craft lesson.
12th November - A girl returned to school at 4.15pm having been struck in the forehead with a stone. The headmaster dressed the small cut and sent her home.
16th November - School envelope collection for the Blind amounted to £5.14s.7d.
30th November - Gymnastic Competition by Forms (Boys), judged by Mr. J. Wilkinson, winners 4th Form, individual Geo. Clements.
3rd December - Miss P. Taylor absent from 10.30 - 2.30 at Police Court reference her stolen bicycle.
4th December - McCall Wardrobe: a travelling wardrobe of 8 sample dresses etc. was exhibited by the senior girls under the direction of Miss Hudson.
5th December - Headmaster attended the opening ceremony of the new Pumping Station at Metton.
6th December - School Speech Day and Prize Giving - prizes presented by Alderman Sam Peel, J.P., Chairman of Norfolk Education Committee. The parents & visitors were invited to view the work set out in each room, and to join the governors & staff at tea in the School Dining Hall.
7th December - A 10ft Christmas Tree was given by Mr. C. Gurney.
13th December - Miss King absent - unable to get from Norwich which is enveloped in fog, and the roads being very treacherous from frost. Carol Concert in evening, members of St. Raphael’s Club (crippled children) were to have taken part but the adverse weather conditions prevented them.
15th December - (Saturday) School Christmas Treat - arranged by the staff with the help of the P.T.A. 250 children sat for tea in the dining hall, and each form provided some kind of entertainment. Professor Agarwala (uncle to a scholar Chandra Parikh) gave a very fine conjuring performance. After party games the proceedings broke up at about 8.15pm.
18th December - Stirring the Christmas Pudding - a huge bath full of the ingredients was escorted by the School Brass band, followed by the Canteen Staff. In the school hall each child stirred the pudding while carols were sung.
19th December - School’s first Drama Session; 3 plays were performed by 1a (The Toy Shop) 2 (The Stolen Prince) and 3a (30 minutes in a Street). Form 2 won and they hold the large decorated "silver" trophy given by Miss Behrens (governor) for a year.
20th December - Christmas Dinner for 200 children in canteen (Roast Pork, Roasted & Mashed potatoes & Sprouts & Apple Sauce, Christmas Pudding & Custard). A special lunch was prepared for the staff, Mr. Newland gave a goose.
21st December - Close. Miss Muriel H. King, who has been on the staff since it opened is leaving today. She was presented with a fountain pen and propelling pencil.
Spring 1952
8th January - Reopen after Christmas Holidays. Number on the roll 224
New appointments - Miss Winifred Emmerson, teaching Advanced Needlework, Weaving, Social Studies, Child Welfare & General Subjects, in charge of Form 1B.
Mrs. Winifred Mary Noon, lately from Nottingham, teaching Drama, Art, French, Social Studies & General Subjects, in charge of Form 3A. (We are still trying to trace Mary Noon, who would be in her early 80s now - does anybody know of her whereabouts?)
17th January - At Morning Assembly the following were enrolled as Prefects; Ann Thirtle, Pam Cork, Pat Frost, Ronnie Bussey, Warren Fisher, Jn. Harrison, David Seago. Head Girl Jacqueline Smith, Head Boy George Clements.
22nd January - Party of 140 children & staff visit Regal Cinema to see ‘Tales of Hoffman’ - special matinee arranged by Mr. Morris, the Manager.
23rd January - Mrs. Wingate-Saul held an ‘Animal Defenders’ Meeting at 3.50pm.
6th February - Death of His Majesty King George VI. Word was brought by Mrs. Noon of the death of the King, the Headmaster confirmed the news by telephoning the local EDP Office. The school flag was raised, and lowered to half mast. All the school was assembled in the Hall and told the sad news, and a prayer was said by the Headmaster.
7th February - At morning assembly a special prayer was said for the late King, the Queen Mother & Royal Family, and our new sovereign Queen Elizabeth II. The Rev. A. Buxton, Chairman of Governors was present and spoke to the whole school.
12th February - Visit to Flashpit Farm, Blickling, by 33 boys with Mr. P. Arnold.
14th February - Mr. E.G. Wheeler, for 27 years a Missionary in India, gave two talks this morning; Hinduism v. Mohammedism to Upper School, Travelling in India to Lower School.
15th February - Funeral Day of His Late Majesty King George VI. Sounds on the route of the Procession were heard on School Wireless from 9 to 10.20am, the two minutes silence being observed all together in the School Hall at 2pm precisely. The Funeral Service in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor was followed by the school assembled in the School Hall.
20th February - Mr. Skew, Youth Employment Officer, talks to 17 boys & girls who can leave at Easter.
28th February - 28 selected boys & girls attend ‘The Intimate Opera’ at the Town Hall, with Miss Taylor & Mrs. Noon.
15th March - A party of 20 boys & girls with Mr. Osborne and 4 other members of staff, and parents, made a trip by charabanc to London. The children spent 2 hours in the Zoo, and attended the meeting of the Metropolitan & Southern Counties Amateur Gymnastic Association.
18th March - The Rev. Robt. Taylor, General Secretary of the Band of Hope, gave an interesting talk of life in Newfoundland & Labrador.
19th March - A party of 30 children go by train to North Walsham to see ‘Iolanthe’ at the Paston Grammar School
28th March - Mr. Woolgar, Co. Projectionist shows a series of films this afternoon; ‘Saws & Boring Tools’ to all the boys; ‘AC & DC, Farmer & Goatherd, Bees’ to 3A upwards; ‘Young Athlete’ to whole school.
1st April - Inter Sec. Mod. Schools Gym Display - this year at Sprowston when 5 schools met.
3rd April - School Trip to Derbyshire. A party of 10 boys and 10 girls with 4 staff, Mr. Arnold, Mr. Askew, Mr. Clowes & Miss Emmerson, go by one coach, driver Mr. W. Babbage, to stay at Longshaw Youth Hostel for 1 week.
4th April - Special Service at Assembly for leavers. The school recorder group played the hymns and the Rev. A. Buxton, Chairman of Governors, spoke to the whole school, and met the ‘leavers’ afterwards in Headmaster’s Room. End of Term.
Summer 1952
22nd April - School re-assembles after Easter, 208 on books.
25th April - Mr. Woolgar, county projectionist shows specially selected films this afternoon.
25th April - The school ‘Animal Defenders’ realised £72 from their Bazaar held in the Parish Hall on Sat. 19th April, for RSPCA funds. Mrs. Wingate-Saul specially mentioned the following for their untiring help - Pat Banner, Julia Steward, Carol Duffey, Ron Banner, Janet Makins, Daphne Barker, Betty Hedge, and Hilary Grimmer.
5th May - Clive Muirhead has been found suitable for admission to Paston Grammar School.
6th May - Colin Hunt is offered a place as from next September at Wymondham
7th May - Prefects, the following were enrolled at a special service in the School Hall this morning; Michael Turner (Head Boy & Games), Jac. Smith (Head Girl), Warren Fisher (Vice Capt. Games), Pam Reaney (Games) David Seago, Eliz. Gibbons (Vice Capt. Games), David Amis, Pam Corke, Albert Warner, Julia Steward, Peter Burrows, Lilian Aldis.
7th May - First School Cross Country Run, 3 mile course to Overstrand by lighthouse & return, 57 entrants, 56 completed the course. Firsts 14+ Michael Turner, 13+ Dav. Lloyd, 12+ Carl Moy, 11+ Peter Twiss.
9th May - Library Van visit, and complete exchange of books
19th May - HM made special journey in own car to Roughton New Inn to inquire into the absence of pupil. He found the boy ‘got up late’, and brought him to school, after a straight talk with the parents.
23rd May - Empire Day. School Sports held today, Tabloid events in the morning and Athletic events in the afternoon. The Red house won both trophies.
30th May - Close for Whitsun vacation
7th June - Visit to Loughboro’ PT College by a party of 30 boys, including 16 gym team under Mr. Osborne. Left by coach (Babbage) at 6am & arrived 10.15, HM accompanied the party. The College Principal personally conducted the boys around the college and later expressed himself delighted with the demonstration of apparatus work and the trampoline, watched by some 250 students.
12th June - County Sports at Yarmouth - half day’s holiday
16th - 21st June - Cromer & North Norfolk Festival of Music & Drama. The school entered the following classes:- Verse Speaking, Drama, Vocal Solo, Recorders, School Choir & Hymn Singing. The School Choir achieved a 1st in the Open Class, and Jennifer White & Julia Steward achieved 1st’s in recorder classes. There were 6 2nd’s and 2 3rd’s.
30th June - 120 children went on an educational trip to H.M.S. Crossbow, lying ¾ mile out at sea.
2nd - 4th July - Three plays performed in the school hall: Peter & The Clock by Kitty Barne, Carpe Diem by Austin Hyde and Women at War by Edward Percy; all produced by Mrs. Noon. The back curtains, wing curtains and flies were hung for the first time for these performances, the proceeds going to the cost of front curtains.
7th July - Miss Judith Badman commences 14 days teaching practice.
15th July - 30 boys & girls go to Stalham to take part in the annual Modern Secondary School Sports, with six schools competing. We came 3rd with 39½ points.
16th July - Boys Gym Team give displays at Sheringham Children’s Home and at Overstrand.
19th July - Boys Gym Team under Mr. Osborne gave a display at Northrepps Village Fete. A letter of appreciation of their work was received from Major Guerney, who also said “it was a great pleasure to talk to such nicely spoken young fellows”.
23rd & 24th July - Summer Concert under Miss P. Taylor held in quadrangle, admission 1/6 (7½p) by programme.
25th July - Miss Anja Auramo, a teacher from Helsinki (Finland) visited the school.
31st July - End of term, special service for leavers at the morning assembly, Rev. A. Buxton present & addressed the children.
